In spite of this, I always remain on the look out for a
specimen which is superior to that which I already own. The problem with
most fanciers from my perspective, is they are unable or unwilling to rid
themselves of those birds which are unable to move their breeding program
forward. Far better to go into the loft and give away 90% of their stock and
start all over again. Instead they maintain a mindset of quantity over
quality, and overcrowd their lofts.
It is mind boggling to me, as to why experienced fanciers will maintain
fifty or more pairs of breeders of questionable breeding value. Why not
select the top six pair, and build around that ? The reason so often
offered, is they feel compelled to play the numbers game and produce
hundreds of young birds in order to be competitive. Yet these same fanciers
will often admit that 95% of their winners can be traced to just a handful
of birds.
At Smith Family Loft, we were determined not to fall into this same mindset.
Our goal was simple and straight forward, eliminate the good, to make room
for the better. In order to achieve these ends, we wanted to turn over the
generations quickly and move out the good, to make room for the really
exceptional.

SFL Family DevelopmentAfter the purchase of the best breeding specimens I could acquire, and a continuous and ongoing selection process, a group of individuals began to emerge, which had those traits and qualities needed to be producers of world class specimens. My rigorous selection process of only breeding from the top 5%, year in and year out. Has produced a very consistent family line.
